My first panic attack happened when I was about 12 yeas old, I really didn’t
know what a panic attack was, this was before doctors even knew there was such a thing. Back in the 50’s we still had one room country school houses. We would have anywhere form 12 to 20 students from grade one to eight, with one teacher for all grades. I remember the day like it was yesterday, I was in the 6th grade, there were two other kids in the same grade. The teacher called for the 6th grade students to come to the front of the room for the reading class.

We would sit on a long seat, actually a church pew was what it was, we would take turns reading whatever reading book was assigned for that day or week. I remember it was my turn to read, by the way I was a very good reader, I stated reading, and a strange feeling I had never experienced came over me, it was like I couldn’t breath, and I felt like I was going to pass out, my voice trembled my heart was pounding, and I was filled with a fear unlike any fear I had ever experienced before. This experience ruined my day, and my life for many years to come. Someone else’s description of a panic attack: “The symptoms of a panic attack are very similar and unmistakable. Most of the time they start out with a strange feeling in your head or chest, it may be like you are being smothered or like a tight rope around your chest making it hard for you to breathe. I always had good grades in school but grades started to drop, also I began to avoid any situation where I may have to read in front of people. I missed a lot of school, whenever it was the day when we would have reading classes I would play sick. I missed 45 days of school, in my 8th grade year because of this this horrible condition. The attack can affect not only your body, but your mind as well, and you may start thinking thoughts that you feel you cannot control. You might feel like you are going to lose control of your body or that the world is closing in around you. You may even feel like you are going crazy. Don’t give up, there is help for preventing panic attacks.

1. Panic attacks will not hurt you, but long term stress from it will wear down your body and mind.
2. Try to understand with proper help you can and will control this condition.
3. Do not fight it, but do not give in to the attack, either, In other words , don’t beat up on yourself, and be positive and believe with help and training you will overcome this.
